Manchester United vs Real Madrid, UEFA Champions League 2nd Leg Round of 16: Open Thread
Manchester United has been cruising through this Premier League season with a 12-point lead at the top of the table. But today will mark their greatest test since the 2012-13 season kicked off eight months ago. Today one of the giants of world soccer will be knocked out.
No matter where you’re watching this match today, the world’s attention will be locked on Old Trafford for two hours where Jose Mourinho says the “world will stop” to watch the game.
And no matter what happens, Sir Alex Ferguson says we should be able to see Ryan Giggs make his 1,000th senior appearance tonight. What an honor.
Man United team v Madrid: De Gea, Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Cleverley, Nani, Welbeck, Giggs, Van Persie
If you live in the United States, today’s match will be shown live on FOX Soccer and FOX Soccer 2Go. FOX Soccer will have commentators Gus Johnson and Warren Barton behind the mic, while we believe Martin Tyler will be announcing the same game shown live on FOX Soccer 2Go.
Before, during and after today’s match, follow the conversation with soccer fans around the world in the comments section below.

great call on no Rooney, Gaffer.
Mrs. Rooney can’t believe it. Neither can I, lol.
Just some serious monster clubs bashing heads and the loser goes home. With probably a billion people watching or at least wanting to know what happened. On a weekday afternoon (US time) no less. Can’t get something that cool in any other sport!
Exactly!
anyone got a (free?) non-gus johnson (gratis?)commentary option (at no charge?) to go with the footage today? please?? help a despairing brother out! only worse thing than watching united go out today will be listening to gus johnson telling me that united are going out today.
Try cricfree . tv
Click on the fourth link. Man U vs Real.
awesome frill artist thanks.
You’re welcome.
i am brickin it.
Anyone know the final score?…
Madrid 3 Man Utd 1 is my prediction.
Gus Johnson will ruin this game for anyone watching the Fox broadcast. Bollocks!
It’s like no one thought to tell Mr Johnson that United fans really don’t like being called ‘Man U’.
I know he doesn’t know a lot about the sport, but it would be akin to calling the Yankees the New York Yanks. Or the Red Sox the Boston Reds.
Gus Johnson is already grating on my nerves.
Spurs fans on twitter freaking out because bale is at old Trafford watching the game lol
Probably checking out Madrid since there were those rumors of him moving.
They don’t have TV in London ? Haha Dust the one year Spurs dynasty is coming to an end.
Keep wishing… Get those tickets to Haiti to perfect your voodoo doll skills… You will need it!
According to both Warren Barton and Gus Johnson, everyone is on fire.
That midfield is super congested, both playing high lines,
Neville would not approve.
It’s interesting that foxsoccer2go is offering both the Gus Johnson feed and the Martin Tyler feed. I wonder which feed will be most popular.
Got the Martin Tyler feed streaming via Apple TV to my TV….
Thankfully
UEFA Ref stops game for Man Utd Non head injury, Clattenburg ignored Ade for 2 mins Spurs v Farcenal… What do you prefer?
IN THE AREA!!!! (not in scoring position)
FIRRRES (barely puts a touch on the ball)
This really is brutal.
New drinking game? Anytime Gus growls ‘in the area’ we drink?
Be blasted by halftime!
Giggs control is just brilliant. Pure class.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
United are leaning on Real now. Looks like just a matter of time until the scoring sheet is opened.
That right there my friends is the worst call I’ve ever heard.
Unreal.
“HEADED UP!!!!! AND IN!!!!!!!!”
Well, it wasn’t headed up and it never went in. Also someone needs to teach Gus about offside.
Use the foxsoccer2go stream with Martin Tyler. Thank you fox for the CHOICE now if you can figure out how to make that choice available on my tv without needing to stream it…. That would be great!
I’m listening to Martin Tyler without streaming. I’m watching the FOX Deportes channel and I changed the SAP to English.
24:47 ‘in the area’
Drink.
“tries to get past Rafael and DAWWSSS”
That Ronaldo turn and attempt brought the Gus Johnson absurdity to it’s peak. WOW!!!!!
United’s defense looks sharp. I think REal will have to beat them on a counter today to get a goal.
Vidic punched in the temple by the FedEx guy in goal for Madrid.
‘Are you surprised how well Manchester United have played in the first half?’
Is that a real question?
I wouldn’t be surprised to see ozil come off for Modric,
Madrid missing that ball from the middle behind the defenders for a Ronaldo or Hig Run
No Gus, no. Bringing basketball into this is just wrong. Pull the plug on this for the second half.
I just cringed… You know he is in over his head when he has to make a football-basketball comparison
He’s speaking to an American audience that has far more experience watching basketball than soccer. The occasional comparison is appropriate.
No he’s talking to an American audience who love and know the game of football/soccer.
United are getting the job done. SAF has this right where he wants it.
Mourinho left early? What is that? Would have loved to see ManU score right after Jose went down the tunnel.
Mourinho had to contact Sauron to figure out how to get his Orc army into a winning position.
Oh yay we get more Gus Johnson this weekend with United vs Chelsea in the FA Cup.
My god!!! this is ridiculous.
Nope. Mute and talkSPORT.
United fans are signing about MCFC at the match apparently. Guess they’re not too worried about Real Madrid.
and that’ll do it.
NIIIICE!!
OG Ramos. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Well, Pepe maybe.
Madrid always needed to score today except they need 1 goal to send it to extra time.
Amen, RM still has to score anyway.
Oooooooooooh
Ah, good to see the bribe that Real paid is hard at work.
LOL… It was dangerous and wreckless tho.
But still…
LoL
So what you’re saying is, we have a chance.
Terrible red card but I have to say I hate when players do what Nani did and pretend they’re injured to try to avoid a card.
Modric…..
LoL he can score at Man Utd
Entertainment. Loving this match regardless of Gus Johsnon now.
Love it.
Such class by CR7. No celebration. Just brilliant.
This tie is over…
It was a terrible card that ruined a great match yeah I know United owns the FA refs but still a yellow card at most.
MODRIC!!!
Game over.
Well good news for United is that Pepe is probably about 3 minutes away from a red card himself so you’ve got that to look forward to.
Still think Rooney should have been dropped?
It was a smart move until Nani was sent off.
If this match didn’t seal Nani’s exit this summer I’m not sure what will. His challenge was reckless at best and if it costs them advancing today then I can’t see any way back for him.
Sacto – the red card was initially shocking and kicked the life out of the match BUT – Nani ran that risk when he dropped kicked the player in his stomach – accidentally or not, makes no difference. This is Europe..
Crap ref ruined the game, turning this into more about him then the players.
Loads of controversy around this match. Terrible for United supporters. Wonderful for the neutrals.
Lopez HUGE there. Fantastic keeping.
Mr Barton, that was not a handball – you are worse that Gus….
Question: quality-wise, how do you rate the quality of the Premier League considering
1. There are no Premier League teams left in the 1/4 final stage of the Champions League.
2. There isn’t a single Premier League player in the Best 11 according to the Ballon D’Or for 2012.
I could say that Madrid haven’t been to a champions league final in over 10 years and the they’re the 2nd best team in Spain.
In that time, Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal have all played in a Champions league final
I’d never measure the Premier League’s quality to the Ballon D’or.
I’d also say that United are hard done here today. Regardless of the outcome, United are the better team.
That’s quite a starment considering the team that finished 6th in the NPL Won the Champions league last year….
You think that a domestic 6th place team in any other league could win the UCL
Pepe getting closer…
Ivan – this is a knockout competition and last time I checked – Arsenal are still in it – Barely.
SAF has now used all his subs and can’t bring on Webb
Dance Jose…dance.
SAF’s post game rant will be so bad all English clubs will be banned from Europe for a decade.
@Dust – and Liverpool will get an extra two years…
Great strategy, Fergie. Put in Welbeck and Nani and leave out Rooney. Bit you in the arse, didn’t it? Welbeck can’t score and Nani can’t pass. RVP is a tad over rated and the only true footballer you have is Rooney. You’re the one who lost the game, Fergie.
This is just total crap. As much as I hate the rags, it is ridiculous for the referees to completely jack up this match.
Let alone to see an injury-faking bunch of tw@s like Real going through to the next round. I can’t stand them in general. Have always hated Ronaldo. Modric? He makes Boy George circa 1985 look butch. And hey Special One, enjoy having Roman Abramovich’s gun perpetually held to your head for the half season or so you last at Chavski next year.
Well, we EPL fans are down to Le Arse this year. Can’t say that fills me with a lot of optimism. But I’d sure be happy if they pulled off a miracle somehow.
Piers Morgan on twitter…lol.
FOX Soccer needs to be reprimanded for the commentators and and studio pundits for their blatant on air bias of Man U, I cannot believe some of the things I was hearing on live television during this broadcast. ABSOLUTE SHOCK.
Game ruined by Gus. Hopeless. Ludicrous, etc etc
Terrible news that he’ll ruin next weekend’s FA Cup game between Man U & Chelsea.
I had to switch off the sound today. He contributes worse than nothing. It beggars belief that, whist ITV were giving viewers an insightful commentary, this buffoon was inflicted on us.
My only problem listening to ITV whilst watching FSC was that the ITV feed was three seconds behind. But it was worth it to get rid of that useless US commentary. Warren did his best to fill in the blanks and help Gus when he said things like “headed away by……(silence)”, but really – why do they inflict him upon us?
Does anyone know how to synchronise the US & UK feeds? Is it better to add talkSPORT?
Just watch the iTV stream, man.
There are so many talking points in this match other than Gus.
If the talkSPORT stream is a little behind you can pause your TV feed momentarily and sync them up pretty well. If talkSPORT is ahead I’m not sure what you can do because if you try to pause TS it just picks up live again.
Ha Joe, your hyper-emotional fluff is delightful to read.
It’s not a game Gus, it’s a match. Please correct.
Definitely a Euro-snob comment. I agree that you hear “match” more than “game” but I don’t think it is something to call someone out on.
This is from the Newcastle United website: “Newcastle’s allocation for this match has sold out. However, tickets remain for next weekend’s home game against Stoke City.”
Maybe it’s me, but it looks like match/game are interchangable.
What’s there to be particular about here? Match / game. Aren’t they just synonyms? Unless there’s something you know about the two words which I don’t. Very much like the football/soccer thing which some pepole like to take so seriously and which never fails to baffle me.
Just think about this. If I were to say:
“My mum PERSUADED me to go out with her”
or,
“My mum CONVINCED me to go out with her”
Is there any difference between the 2 statements at all? Or would I be wrong to use one of them?
Just looking for something to whine about. No one is forcing you to watch FSC.
I think he was trying to be “one of the boys” and look like he knows what he is talking about…but all you have to do is look at his next post about RVP and Arsenal to realize that he is:

2. The light’s on but no one’s home.

Or, something of the sort…
RVP would still be in the Champions League if he was at Arsenal!
yeah 7 days more…
You Mr Fergie ruined this match, can’t say i’m suprised(maybe nani’s red card) but i guessed i expected him to ineffective all night.
I knew we’ll lose when i saw the line up, Fergie has some serious questions to answer concerning the starting 11 today.
How do you explain cleverly starting ahead of Kagawa,
How does he also explain Rooney not starting a match of this magnitude, my God if i had my way i’ll punch that red nose.
Thank God a good lad paid me £1,000 for my ticket.
As for nani well i guess that final act leaves me with 1 word for him “GOODLUCK IN YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVOUR”
Prinz,
I’m Coming.
Nothing to be ashamed of tonight. We controlled the game until the red card. Guess we will just have to win the double now.
Controlled the game, but didn’t score a goal proper.
Ok Gus, I gave you a chance 3 weeks ago but tonight was painful. You are a clueless novice who has no business calling anything to do with football with the possible exception of the MLS. Please do one and take that muppet Barton with his constant “they’re squeezing” over and over. The only thing that needed squeezing was Barton’s neck after the first 10 minutes.
Glad that both Madrid and Dortmund have made it through, looking forward to seeing how the rest of the round of 16 unfolds.
