Premier League Saturday, Gameweek 5: Open Thread
There’ll be a welcome on the hillside this morning when Swansea City kicks off the Premier League gameweek 5 with a home match against high-flying Everton. I’m obviously biased, but this one promises to be a barn buster. Can Nathan Dyer show what he has against Leighton Baines? Can Everton stop Michu from playing his wonderful football in midfield? Will Everton be able to make up for the disappointment of drawing Newcastle on Monday after being cheated out of two goals?
We shall see beginning at 7:45am ET/12:45pm BST today.
Following that match, we have several 10am/3pm BST matches — Chelsea versus Stoke, West Ham vs Sunderland, Southampton vs Aston Villa and West Brom versus Reading. And then the late kick-off is a homecoming for Hugo Rodallega as Fulham travels to Wigan.
Before, during and after today’s matches, post your rants, raves, questions and observations in the comnents section below.

I like the early games – great way to start the weekend
Well, that’s just been coming. Swans need to get going.
Did I just see the terrible word “soccer” on the electronic sideline board in Wales?
Don’t remember Swansea being outplayed like this ever. Very poor start for them and now having to chase a 2 goal deficit it’s going to be tough to come back. They should have got one back just before the half so maybe they will come out for the second half and give it a go. Everton are very good on the counter attack and I can see them scoring again.
Swansea playing poorly!
What was Dyer thinking? It’s over now.
Tremendous performance by Everton, maybe the best I’ve seen them play…perhaps not surprisingly about as bad as I’ve seen Swansea.
only watched the second half onwards, everton looked very good, not sure why swansea were so chipy, didn’t do them selves any favors, dyer needs a head check goading the ref to give him a yellow, and then that challenge he made…lucky he didn’t break someones leg.
ESPN tho, much better, good commentator and co commentator, much more insightful than the normal clown pairing. liked it enough to keep it on all the way up to the chelski stoke kick off. good job espn. keep clear of darke and Macca, all sizzle no steak!
+1 for “clown pairing” (though I do admit to liking some of Ian’s occasional quips.)
Frustrating performance from Swansea. They were missing their engine from the beginning (Leon Britton). As soon as Britton came on in the second half, Swansea looked a much better team.
Entertaining match overall. It could have easily ended 5-3 to Everton if it wasn’t for Tim Howard making some wonderful saves. Swansea created enough chances, but they came up against a very strong Everton side today. Onwards and upwards.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Somebody must have paid Everton to try harder.
Ouch!

The Gaffer
should be 1-0 stoke, great set piece chance against the post..should have scored.
ivanovic staring in the “the dive” a hazzard production. Jeez how is he not on a yellow, what a joke
Just a fantastic attempt on goal by Nolan and equally world-class save in the 43rd of the West Ham Game – check it out if you have FS2Go and can watch the replay later.
Should be level by run of play… Fat Sam continues to frustrate with his selection. I’m sure he has a set style he wants, but so hard to watch. I call it the bump and gun.
Ha ha – Fat Sam. I’ll share that with my two cousins who are die-hard Hammers and who both hate him.
I wonder who gave Everton a “suitcase” to beat swansea? Cardiff?
Oscar co staring in “the dive” a hazzard production. just wrong..he deserved the card.
Are you willing to say the same about Gareth ” Serial Diver ” Bale ?
Seriously? LOL Are you comparing those 2 dives to what happens to bale on the flanks? LOL Its not even the same, how many times have you seen bale go down in the penalty area? those 2 Dives involved 0 contact! bale is always kicked, show me video of bale going down without being touched, if it happens so much there should be a lot to choose from. i look forward to a youtube link with multiple examples.
Bale was shown yellow card twice last season for diving.

show me the video
No you’re right Ivanovic dived but I want you to show the same disdain when Bale dives.
if bale ever did what ivanovic or ocasr did i would
Bale dives against Real Madrid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxohXc99Hvc
a good find, he gets contact and goes down.
here is an example of it not being a dive.

I’m waiting for your disdain for Bale’s serial diving ?!?
will owen score the winner?
Stoke are so frustrating to watch, they just keep fouling their opposition players over and over again and it seems that is their style of preventing opponents from scoring. Their style of play makes it difficult for them to score goals as well. Gah… it’s no wonder they’ve been neither winning nor losing.
Which genius loaned Lukaku and put the hopes of scoring goals on Torres’ shoulders.?
that’s unlike ivanovic to be dirty and foul ..LOL
if that was stoke there would be uproar, studs up luiz challenge
1-1 WHU- Sunderland
WELL-deserved tally for Nolan in extra time! I think WHU must have a 4-1 advantage in quality chances today.
Like a RATIO of 4-1 as WHU has been on the relentless attack all match long
stoke plated hard, and were unlucky not to get the draw, you have to take your chances. chelsea worked hard for the goal. the overhead replay shows how lackluster torres was when cole made his run for the goal.
not good
*played
I bet Rickie Lambert would be more productive then Fernando Torres.
i think abramovich will be back down the training ground this week, asking why DM took off the 35 m man for the 8 m man
I just needed to jump in here to say …
… the FOX Soccer studio crew (Stone / Barton / Wynalda / McBride) are HORRIBLE!
I was sort of excited when Stone replaced Miles (who was also terrible) – but Stone is equally bad.
Anything from a FOX Soccer studio is simply the worst.
I am still disappointed about the new FoxSoccerNews program.
And FOX has the 2018 World Cup?!? Wow – that is really too bad …
I agree whole heatedly…do they really have the world cup? omg thats not cool. If fox get the BPL they have to do a clean sweep of their presenter / pundit personnel.
They have the rights for every FIFA tournament from 2015-2022 (World Cup, Youth World Cup, Women’s World Cup, Confederations Cup)
i would not be surprised if Moyes took over from SAF … Man utd love their scot managers…Busby…SAF…
…still waiting to see a link to all these bale diving video’s? c’mon there must be a ton out there not just one or 2..
errr…Southampton! Holy smokes! 1-0 down come back and win 4-1…what a great result for those guys, they really impressed against the Manchester clubs.
wow, congrats SFC.
