2012-13 Premier League Table Predictions

What’s your prediction for how the 2012-13 Premier League table will finish? Which clubs will fill positions one through 20?
It’s the million dollar question for this, the 21st season of the English Premier League. The bounty for the clubs who stay up this season will be a massive rise in revenue from global TV rights beginning in the 2013-14 season. Therefore, there’s so much riding on the line. And this, I truly believe, will be the most competitive Premier League season in the history of the league — from top to bottom. That doesn’t mean there’ll be a new club on top of the table at the end of the season, but what it does mean is that quality of soccer on display will be the best it’s ever been.
For the past six years, I’ve posted my predictions for what the Premier League table would look like if the season ended (2011-12, 2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09, 2007-08, 2006-07). And now, here are my predictions for how the 2012-13 Premier League table will finish:
- Manchester City (C)
- Manchester United
- Chelsea
- Newcastle United
- Arsenal
- Liverpool
- Tottenham Hotspur
- Swansea City
- Fulham
- Everton
- Aston Villa
- Reading
- West Bromwich Albion
- Southampton
- Norwich City
- Sunderland
- Wigan Athletic
- Stoke City (R)
- Queens Park Rangers (R)
- West Ham United (R)
FA Cup: Manchester United
League Cup: Manchester City
Even with Manchester United signing Robin van Persie, who will be a goalscoring machine for Manchester United, there are still too many weaknesses in this team especially in defense. Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand are not the defenders they once were, and over the course of the season, they will make mistakes.
Manchester City, meanwhile, is going to go from strength to strength. The only obstacle in their path is themselves. As long as Roberto Mancini can keep order within the ranks of City by giving his footballers enough playing time, City will be unstoppable.
Elsewhere, Chelsea will wobble but they have enough depth (and money) to stabilize the club into a third place finish. Arsenal still has a lot of room to improve, and the departure of van Persie will have a serious impact on their aim of qualifying for the Champions League.
Newcastle United has made wise choices in the transfer market, which has only strengthened an already versatile Newcastle squad. Tottenham, despite their abundance of talent, are going to suffer at the hands of Andre Villas-Boas. I predict that the pressure will get to him, just as it did at Chelsea, and it’ll be detrimental to the team’s performances on the pitch.
At the bottom of the table, Stoke City will bid adieu to life in the Premier League after their tired and older squad will come undone against younger and more skillful opponents. Likewise, Queens Park Rangers will continue to struggle to play as a team, and will be relegated, where they’ll join West Ham United in going down.
Post your predictions (positions 1-20 below, including FA Cup and League Cup winners). Plus, if you agree or disagree with any of the above predictions, please be constructive in your criticism and tell us why you agree or disagree.
I look forward to reading your predictions and analysis.
Note that these predictions were made before the 2012-13 Premier League season started, and before the summer transfer window concluded, so a flurry of transfer activity could have a profound effect on how the table will shift.

Qpr relegated??!?! Not a chance…they’ve made some decent signings added to mark Hughes being a decent manager and lots of funds to purchase if they are struggling in Jan …can’t see them going down.

A late injury time goal by Stoke’s Ryan Shotton sees City stay up and Swansea head back to the Championship. :^P
I think between 3rd and 7th as you list them are a complete guess right now.
As a Spurs fan I want to protest them coming in so low — but it could happen. I don’t think it’ll be AVB so much as a lack of strikers, though. I’m hoping Levy makes some (multiple) last minute acquisitions, but if he doesn’t I can’t see Kane/Defoe doing near enough to keep them above the 7th you’re showing.
Swansea seems generous considering who they’ve lost. I’ll wish them well and think they’ll stay up, but I’m not sure if they’ll do much better than last year.

Ok I’m not even going to comment on West Ham cause that is a joke… They may be in trouble but look at the line up, look who they picked up… look at the style they play. look at the manager… This isn’t Avram Grant’s clueless squad.
But QPR???? Park Ji-Sung and Hoilett will more then account for the lose of Barton…. Green is an upgrade, Fabio is a solid loan pick up… What team are you looking at? QPR roll over the Swans week 1.
come on… but you out yourself with Swansea 8- after selling off some if its best players, Gaffer. There is subjective and there is SUBJECTIVE. De Guzman is an injury waiting to happen and the Rossi of Canada.. Chino is a decent central defender, and Michu a mid but both don’t seem to be PL quality from reports. Hey maybe they can do it again and stay up.. but 8?
please.
Thing is, from 20 to 9 it is very very close. West Brom, Norwich and Wigan for me to go down.
Man City, Man U, Arsenal Chelsea Tottenham Liverpool & Everton for the Europe spots
Hoping west ham stay up this season as I always enjoy our games against them for some reason.
Agreed. I don’t think QPR does anything too shocking in terms of results, but I think they’re going to catch the casual observer by surprise this season and finish somewhere 10-13 with a decent run in the cups.
Haha! Swansea 5-0. Michu is too beast!!!!

It’s liverpools year of course. The title will stay in Manchester next season. It’s between Utd and city again this season although I dont think either team will be as consistent as last year. Yaya toure is the x-factor for me he takes city from a good to a very good team.

19. Swansea ( sorry gaffer in think they have lost to many pieces in the off season)
20. Reading

Don’t get why so many people are sleeping on Everton. They finished 7th last year and have only gotten better, especially if they pull of the Mirallas deal. I think they’ll finish somewhere between 5-7.
There was a pretty big gap between 7th and 6th last year though. Whilst 7th is a very good finish, they didnt look close to finishing higher at any point. There was a definite gulf in class between the top 6 and the rest and they were really the best of the rest. Who knows though, it could be completely different this year
Everton are regular overachievers, but the field of competition has been getting stronger every year. I think 7th and a Europa qualification sounds reasonable.

Admittedly I have a higher opinion of Arsenal’s signings than most and i could be wrong there i think that with the loss of RVP won’t be as huge a deal and that they will band together. I think that Chelsea will struggle as they are in transition. United’s defense for me is just average and is going to leak goals. Tottenham’s position for me is conditional on them making some moves before the deadline if not they will for me fall out of the top 4. I think that this is the year that Everton finally starts a season strongly. Liverpool will have flashes of it but isnt quite there yet for me. i think newcastle will make a deep run in the Europa league so there league position will be hurt. After that its got to be a guess on everything as there is so much parity. I do think that the promoted teams will stay up especially Reading. Other than that its a guess. Good luck to all and I’m glad that the EPL is back finally.
Chelski are going to implode. QPR will stay up. Most likely Champions will be from manchester (Citeh need reinforcements in defense, United in midfield as well). Agree it will be more rocky than last year. Toons are a big question mark, I don’t see Scousers making any substantial movement. Gooners probably stay in 3rd, and Spuds continue to fall all against the backdrop of their ridiculous manager in his histrionic dance moves in designer trench coats. Question is which gaffer goes 1st? (Odds are Chelski or Tottenham)
Spurs behind Newcastle, Arsenal, and LFC? Gaffer, surely you jest. If Adebayor wants to actually earn his money out on the field this year and they can swing getting his 18 goals back I think the Spurs look better than the above three.
I know better than to expect too many good things to happen to City so maybe SAF has a swan song and gets another League title here. After last year I pretty much anticipate about a 4 year period where I really can’t be disappointed by too much ever as far as League play. Would love some European silverware though!
Of the relegation zone I just hope Norwich City, West Ham, and Swansea stay up. And that AVFC gets sent down as befitting any operation associated with the Lerner family. (Sorry Birmingham, but I lived a lot of my life near Cleveland Ohio).

Can’t see Chelsea doing as well as people think, people forget they will be RELYING on TORRES for goals! City and United are miles ahead having at least 3 top strikers… They will be in the mix for the 2 CL spots with Arsenal, Newcastle and Spurs. This season is soooo unpredictable! There are so many teams that could go either way, more than any other season, which makes it so hard to predict. There’s still a clear top 2 for me, but the battle for 3rd & 4th is wide open, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Newcastle are all capable of getting a champions league spot, even Everton could have a say in it, as for relegation, I think that battle is harder to call than 3rd & 4th! I think any of up to 11 teams could get relegated, I don’t think the promoted teams are as weak as some people are making out and I think Wigan are more likely to stay up than they ever have been. Here’s my table:
1. Manchester United – Fergie magic & squad improvements will take them to the top.
2. Manchester City – Close 2nd, not much improvement, 1 minute away from losing title, united improved.
3. Arsenal – Wenger magic, Cazorla and Podolski will more than replace RVP.
4. Liverpool – I must be crazy. I think the BR influence will sink in quickly & lead them to success.
5. Chelsea – Matteo sacked half way through the season. Not improved enough.
6. Everton – 20 goals from Jelavic will shoot them up the table. David Moyes top top top manager.
7. Newcastle – Same as last season, good solid top 7 performance.
8. Spurs – Could go either way, I think AVB will fail, striker situation worrying. (I hope I’m wrong)
9. Sunderland – Will buy a good striker before window closes, Martin O’neill top manager first full season.
10. QPR – Mark Hughes top manager, been backed by the board. Good team, big improvement.
11. Swansea – Could go either way, anything can happen with big squad changes + manager.
12. Aston Villa – Paul Lambert good manager, will keep this poor Villa side up comfortably, Bent vital.
13. Southampton – exciting young players, will be a pleasure to watch this season.
14. West Ham – Sam Allerdyce is a good solid prem manager, will keep any side up. LONG BALL!!
15. Fulham – They’ve only gotten worse over the summer, could be even worst if Dempsey goes.
16. Wigan – They will continue their end of season form and survive, Martinez great manager.
17. Reading – Just survive. Good manager, first season high, not sure where the goals will come though.
18. WBA – Steve Clarke not a good choice of manager. Could go either way, Lukaku fantastic loan signing.
19. Stoke – More in hope than expectation. I’d love nothing more than to see them get relegated this season.
20. Norwich – Steve Hughton will fail, high of first season will be dead, squad not that great.
This season is going to be epic!!!!!!!!!!!!! 9th-20th is completely open, 3rd-8th is too, can’t wait.
Hahahahaha,
Di Matteo has been sacked!!
What a prediction mate!
FA cup: Arsenal – Cup competitions are so hard to call, so lets just give Arsenal their trophy!!!
League cup: Liverpool – They always win cups even when they’re terrible.
Man Utd top, and Stoke will NOT be relegate this season.

What planet are you on mate? Stoke, Reading and Fulham to finish above Everton! On what basis clown?
8-12 was a toss up for me.
Besides, 8-20 is pretty much wide open in the EPL every year.
I don’t like Everton that much this year, but good grief, its not like I had them relegated.
Clown?? not so much. Grow up.
Maybe not a clown, but your love of the Kop has perhaps blinded you???
Swansea City last, i highly doubt this! And would of predicted them to stay up, even at the start of the seasoN!

Brighton? Bonus points for being the only one so far to pick a lower division trophy winner.
and he picked newcastle to win the league cup. He’s got some guts with those picks. Though I wouldnt mind seeing the toon finally win a trophy even if it is just the league cup.
Well, it’s for fun, right?
I’ve always liked Poyet, and I used to play in NYC with a guy who once played for Brighton, so, why not?
you might want to reread the post i think their was a Nottingham Forest for league cup i could be wrong but i don’t think so.

I expect this year to be extremely tight. You could effectively break it into 3 pieces, the top 6, the next 5, and the bottom 9. I expect to see a lot of movement within these 3 brackets all year long.
1. Manchester City (City will likely gel better this year. Tevez should lead the line and if Balotelli can keep out of the Ref’s book, he will be a force. Also, Yaya Toure is arguably one of the best players in the league)
2. Arsenal (Without RVP, and even if they also lose Song, the side still seems stronger than last year. Cazorla is a more like replacement for Cesc and they are more prepared for the beginning of the season than last. Defense should be shored up quite a bit with new Assistant Steve Bould)
3. Manchester United (Tons of attacking options, but lacking depth in defense and in midfield. Still some questions over keeper situation. Will be neck and neck with Arsenal till the end)
4. Liverpool (Rodgers’ philosophy will add some more attractiveness their side, expect better after this season)
5. Tottenham Hotspur (Modric will most likely be gone, and without any big name additions, they likely cant maintain for an entire season. Strong start, but fade in the end)
6. Chelsea (Not enough strikers, but a very solid midfield. If they start mediocre, Torres doesnt find his form and arent in the top 5 or 6 by December, expect RDM gone)
7. Everton (Only better than last year, which they surprised in even after some key losses. Start weak but finish strong as always)
8. Newcastle United (A team is more than the sum of its parts, and Newcastle embodies that. They could really end up anywhere from winning to relegated)
9. Aston Villa (Lambert should bring this side back into the form that they had under O’Neill, but only enough to just break into the top 10)
10. Sunderland (Under O’Neill, good at home, but sad on the road. Lots of Draws expected from them)
11. Queens Park Rangers (Better than last year, should be safe all year from relegation)
12. Fulham (Dempsey is going to be gone, his position untenable. Without him, Fulham will drift around mid table and flirt with relegation at times)
13. West Ham United (Big Sam is back in the league, but his brand of football wont compete with the fast attractive play of the big names)
14. Stoke (they got my boy Geoff Cameron from the Dynamo in the team, they will drift around mid table)
15. Reading (Royals are finally back in the league, good start like QPR last year, but then drift back down slowly and squeak it out in the last weeks)
16. Swansea (Loss of some key players and a key manager will likely make them start slow hang below 10 all year)
17. Southampton (League One to EPL in 2 years. Sounds like Blackpool, but without Ian Holloway to make us all smile. Squeak it out at the end)
18. Norwich City (Unlucky at times last year (ie. against Man U). One of the more underrated sides, start mid table but fall fast)
19. Wigan Athletic (You can play craps all day long, but at some point you are going to crap out. Will it be this year they finally get relegated?)
20. West Brom Albion (Going to be heartbreak all year. They will get some surprise results at times, but will fall to the bottom)
FA cup: Arsenal (they need a major trophy, and Wenger will go balls to the wall for this one)
League cup: Newcastle United (the top teams will be fighting so hard for the league that they will play their reserves later in this competition, the mid table teams will take it as a chance for a trophy and go at it strongly)
Champions League: Real Madrid (This is all the special one cares about, and he will pull it off this year)
Its going to be a tough nail-biting season. I think everyone here has a pretty equal shot at being right. The above is a pretty rough guess based on what I know and have followed so far.
I think a lot of people like to slag off Arsenal based on the beginning of last year and the 8-2 at Old Trafford. For having one of their worst teams, they managed to finish 3rd, which is no mean feat. This year, they finally replace Cesc with the addition of Cazorla (who they wanted last year). Wilshere should be back around mid year, the Ox is coming into form, and new boys Giroud and Podolski will surprise. Expect Gervinho to have a banner year.

Gotta love the dipsh*t United fanbois going through and disliking any post that doesn’t have them first or second.
Come on, fanbois. Unleash your fury.

Liverpool in decline, Newcastle over performed last year. There wil be a big gap between 6th and 7th
1 City- Too strong, even for United
2 United- Just miss out
3 Chelsea/ Arsenal- Can’t pick which London club will finish top 4, both weak at the back
4 Liverpool- Rodgers will get the team playing well, good signings
5 Chelsea/ Arsenal Above
6 Spurs- AVB doesn’t get the team playing well fans, media etc get on his back, Harry comes back in Jan and “saves” them.
7 Newcastle- not quite strong enough to get into 6th spot.
8 Everton- the usual, although Jelavic bangs them in for fun
9 Fulham- have a decent season, Dempsey stays
10 Villa- Lambert their saviour
11 Sunderland- Get a decent striker, do well enough
12 QPR- experienced signings pay off
13 West Ham- Big Sam is a good enough PL manager, keeps them fairly easily
14 Southhampton- have wonderful season, joy to watch, pull off some big wins
15 Norwich- Players/ manager do enough
16 Stoke- same as above
17 West Brom- just scrape it
18 Reading- good start, fall away, think Blackpool
19 Swansea- signings not good enough.
20 Wigan- have a very poor season, don’t do the usual, Martinez leaves
FA cup- City
League cup- Liverpool
1. Manchester City (C)
2. Manchester United
3. Chelsea
4.Newcastle United
5. Liverpool
6. Tottenham

20. Reading (R)
FA Cup: Liverpool
League Cup: Stoke City
1 – Man United- A healthy Vidic and they would have won it last year. On top of that, Kagawa and RVP get the job done. Carrick makes or breaks this team at CDM.
2 – Man City- A deeper european campaign (semifinalists in my opinion) will cost them points in January, and they look quite shaky at the back without Hart. The Southampton game could be interesting (or I’m about to look like an absolute idiot)
3 – Chelsea- Hazard signing is quality, and the players don’t mutiny under RDM like they did under AVB.
4 – Tottenham- This is contingent on them getting the Adebayor deal done. Signing M’Vila could make them a serious threat for 3rd.
5 – Liverpool- Brendan Rodgers gets them going in the right direction. Carroll’s storyline will make things very interesting…
6 – Arsenal- They were fortunate to have Chelsea and Spurs collapse in front of them last year. Arsenal will start in a similar hole, and the other 2 london sides won’t let up this time. If they lose Song and Ox doesn’t get fit soon, this could get ugly.
7 – Sunderland- The Martin O’Neill factor will take them to the top of the Northeast.
8 – Newcastle United- Thin squad costs them trying to compete on 4 fronts. They will be very fun to watch.
9 – Aston Villa- No longer playing Alex McCleish football, thank God. I miss the Villa of 3 or 4 years ago.
10 – Everton- The lack of talent up front is concerning. Another typical spring rally will see them rise up the table from deep as usual.
11- Stoke City- Pulis continues to get things done, and they don’t have to worry about trying to work in the Europa league schedule this time.
12 – QPR- I like the signings they have made. If Cisse stays on the field, he could finish in the 15-20 goal territory. Rob Green >>>Paddy Kenny. Taraabt starts to look like himself. Pay someone to take Barton away from them.
13 – Fulham- Another solid side, but the Dempsey situation will be a distraction until it is settled.
14 – Southampton- Remind me of Swansea last year. Hopefully they continue their attacking style.
15 – Wigan Athletic- Somehow, some way, Roberto Martinez saves this club again. Al Habsi continues to play ridiculously well against Chelsea.
16 – Swansea City- They are going to bleed goals, but they will also be scoring quite a few too. They survive the drop if Vorm can continue his outstanding tenure at Swansea.
Honestly, I have serious issues separating these final 4.
17 – West Bromwich Albion- Very blah. Remember what they looked like before Hodgson turned them into the new Fulham.
18 – Norwich City- Awful preseason. Losing their manager will be key, and I don’t see Holt performing on the same level again. The Snodgrass signing could prove key to them staying up.
19 – Reading- The new Bolton without any players like Sturridge, Wilshere and Elmander leaves them down, just like Bolton.
20 – West Ham United- Big Sam sacked by the winter transfer window. Steve Kean tries to save the day.
I’ve obviously got my heavy United bias, but my greatest hope for this year is that the center back pairing for big matches is Jones-Vidic by season’s end. I love what Rio has done for the club, but he has gone a bit delusional with his ego. He’s getting slower by the day, and I’m not comfortable with him on the pitch against sides like city.

Are you seriously retarded you put arsenal 9th below Aston villa who just survived relegation last year and below Norwich who got thumped 5-0 by the mighty Fulham. at the very least they should be in 4th place as Newcastle doesn’t have the squad depth to cope with both Europa league and Premier league and Liverpool are a working progress. Another thing I dislike Tottenham a lot but I’m not stupid enough to place them 12th even if they lose Modric they will definatley be in top 6. Man City will win the league
Red Gooner, there’s no need to call someone out because they simply expressed an opinion and prediction. Put your money where your mouth is and post your own predictions, and we’ll see who’s right at the end of the season
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Red Gooner – If anyone walks a fine line of abusive language it may be myself. However I’d watch out when you throw that word around. You never know when you may pop off at the mouth and have say a brother of someone with down syndrome and get left missing a few teeth.
1. Machester City (even with no further signings have a strong squad; but expect 1 or 2 good signings)
2. Manchester United
3. Liverpool (surprise team of the season; surely they won’t hit the woodwork as much as last season)
4. Spurs
5. Chelsea (they will struggle arely and can see Di Mateo replaced by December with Hiddink/Guardiola)
6. Arsenal (new signings will take time to gel and loss of RVP and Song will hurt)

Barclays Premier League Top 5 Goal Scores:
1.Tevez
2.Torres
3.Michu
4.Jelavic/Fellani
5.Petric
1. Man City- (Will have another amazing home record and Aguero & Tevez will be unstoppable)
2. Man United- (Will be another close season, but I think RVP will find it hard to fit in)
3. Chelsea- (Will be a much better side- Hazard and Oscar will both be contenders for Young player of the season, and also Torres will find form and will start scoring again)
4. Liverpool- (If Liverpool sign Sahin then I think Liverpool will finish in the top four, plus Liverpool will have a much better home record this season.)
———————-
5. Arsenal- (Losing RVP and Song, their two best players last season. Podolski isn’t half the player Van Persie is, and also in my opinion Song cannot be replaced)
6. Tottenham- (Modric likely to move to Madrid which will be a massive loss. Also, not a strong enough defence. AVB will get sacked halfway through the season)
7. Newcastle- (Ba & Cisse will form a great partnership, Ben Arfa has found form again. Will be a hard team to beat, but wont do as well as last year)
8. Everton- (Jelavic will get 15+ goals, and Fellaini will have an amazing season, will be a difficult team to beat)
9. Fulham- (Petric will get goals and if Dempsey stays they will form a good partnership. Will beat top sides aswell)
10. Swansea- (Michu will be a top player at Swansea and will get goals. They have made cheap but very good signings which will be good enough for Swansea to finish in the top ten)
11. Sunderland- (Have bought Fletcher from Wolves, he is a decent striker. And also Adam Johnson. Sessegnon is an outstanding player, in my opinion is good enough to play for United or City).
12. West Brom- (Wont be consistent, and players arent good enough for West Brom to finish in the top half)
13. Stoke- (Same old Stoke, will do well against the bigger teams and will have a good home record but will be awful away from home)
14. Norwich- (Grant Holt will be their best player this season, Chris Huyton wont do a better than Paul Lambert)
15. Southampton- (Ricky Lambert will score 10+ goals, and if they sign Gaston Ramirez that should guarantee a finish above relegation)
16. West Ham- (Will be good at home, and their squad should be good enough to keep them up. I can see Sam Allardyce being sacked by the end of the season)
17. Wigan- (Will only just stay up, like they usually do. They will have a bad start to the season but will beat top teams at the end of the season to keep them up)
——————————————————————————————————————
18. Aston Villa- (Haven’t got a strong enough squad, and will struggle against the smaller sides)
19. Reading- (Haven’t made good enough signings to keep them up)
20. QPR- (Have been very busy during the transfer window, but not good enough signings to keep them up)

Gaffer, is there any deadline for which we can post our predictions or can we post them any time we want?
Because if people make their predictions later into the season, wouldn’t it give them an unfair advantage when you tally the points and winners at the end of the season? Just wondering.
There’s no deadline, but I’ll give special kudos to those who voted early.
Cheers,
