New York Red Bulls vs Tottenham Hotspur, Friendly: Open Thread

Tottenham plays their final match of their US summer tour tonight when they kick off against New York Red Bulls at 7pm ET in New Jersey.
The match, will be televised live on ESPN2/ESPN3.com for viewers in the United States.
Tottenham’s starting line-up for tonight’s match is: Gomes; Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto; Huddlestone, Livermore; Bentley, Sigurdsson, Lennon; Bale.
Gareth Bale has recovered from the tough tackle he received from Charlie Adam during last weekend’s friendly against Liverpool. Heurelho Gomes makes a rare start in goal for Tottenham. Overall, Tottenham has named a strong starting eleven against a MLS team that it hopes to beat to win the Barclays New York Cup.

Gomes who
When was the last time he played for Spurs? Will be nice to see how well he does and if he will fit into AVB’s plans.
hasn’t this game been postponed??
scrub that, watching it on ESPN…. Sky sports score centre reporting the games as postponed…
Not sure what Sky Sports Score Centre is smoking tonight. The game is getting ready to kick off.

Bale as Center forward could be interesting
COYS!

Andre Villas-Boas was right. The condition of the pitch looks like s**t.

it does look bad, but not as bad as Jan getting suckered into make that challenge. Premier league vet against a newbie..jan will learn.
LOL
What was Jan Vertonghen thinking? Awful defending. Not a good sign for Spurs.

The Gaffer
It’s early days in this game, but I’ll be interested to read what everyone thinks about Gareth Bale playing as centre forward for Spurs.

I enjoyed seeing Gareth Bale in that position, but as others said, he was drifting a lot. His conditioning seemed to be able to handle it, but I’d be worried that doing that over time would hurt performance in future games. I’d like to see a few more games before I get my final opinion though.
I only watched the last 20 minutes of the first half and he was constantly playing on the line waiting for someone to give him that killer pass, but it never came. I think he has so much potential as a striker.
Jan will learn, he will cut his teeth pretty fast.
Bale seems to be drifting all over instead of playing as a true CF
“You got Lade” chant lol
Lennon still a liability, Andre just go out and buy Adam Johnson from city!
I would like to see Wondolowski get a move to spurs after the MLS season ends like Donovan did for Everton. Wondo is a natural goalscorer, he could be the next US export to the EPL.
Too bad that I’m scared to turn it on ESPN for fear of getting a plateful of Olympics spoilers
look away
an olympic spoiler coming in a sec
redbulls keeper making some great saves to keep it at 1-0
nice header by bale, about time, we put one of the chances away
time to open the floodgates
spurs are one midfielder away from being a great team.
we still have valencia as a pre season game
Super Super Sig! Super Super Sig! Super Super Sig Super Glyfi Siguardson!
Gylfi will always walk alone!!

Liverpool Fans
LOLZ….top class goal
Brilliant goal by Gylfi Sigurdsson!
And there goes Taylor Twellman with my pet peeve again, him talking about a footballer getting the ball “on frame.”

cmon kane should have been 3!
Red Bull are just awful defending….
I’m glad to see Cahill do well to get himself in important positions to score or set up goals for others. I think he’ll be a fantastic signing though I wish he could play defense too haha. Red Bulls seriously need to get back Barklage because Solli has struggled mightily since coming back. I still really wonder why Bale isn’t playing for team GB.
i think if they sell Luka it might be a short time loss but a longtime gain if they spend wisely. I think his form has slipped and it might be because he did not get the transfer last year.
Best comment up.
long term not longtime
Bale at center forward does it negate his greatest asset-speed a little? I’d like to see them play with this formation vs certain teams but still also use Bale wide. I liked what I saw and need to see how it positively or negatively impacts others on midfield vs better competition.
