2012 Champions League Final, Bayern Munich vs Chelsea: Open Thread

The time has arrived for the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich — the traditional end to the 2011-12 season. Be sure you know where to watch Chelsea against Bayern Munich on TV. And don’t forget to read our Champions League Final preview, as well as listening to the Champions League Final preview podcast.
FOX Soccer lead studio host, Rob Stone, on whether Bayern Munich is a heavy favorite playing at home:
“Without a doubt Bayern Munich is the favorite. They would have been the favorite even if the game was held at a neutral site. With the form that Bayern Munich is in, and the offensive capability that they have, and with the suspensions that are hitting a majority of the Chelsea starting players, it is beyond fair to say that Bayern Munich is the favorite.”
FOX Soccer analyst and former U.S. Men’s National Team striker, Eric Wynalda, on the match up:
“They are both very good teams, but it will be a different cast of characters in Munich for Chelsea because of the suspensions of several players. That said, [Chelsea] is riding the excitement of a FA Cup win and that will help. On paper right now, with the suspensions that both teams have, it’s going to be a very offensive game. Regardless, it’s going to be a great game and either way there are going to be a lot of goals in this one.”
FOX Soccer analyst and former Newcastle United defender Warren Barton on the game’s most impactful player:
“For me it’s Didier Drogba. I’ve played with people like Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer, and Drogba is my type of striker. There are others more technically gifted, but all day long I’ll take Drogba. He’s big, physical and fast, and he knows his way around the goal.”
Starting lineups:
Chelsea team: Cech; Bosingwa, Cahill, Luiz, Cole; Mikel, Lampard; Kalou, Mata, Bertrand; Drogba
Bayern Munich: Neuer – Lahm, Tymoshchuk, Boateng, Contento – Schweinsteiger, Kroos – Robben, Müller, Ribery – Gomez

Well, for starters, how ’bout if Rob looks up the definition of “majority”.
Hats off to FOX Soccer. Good Champions League pre-match coverage from the 1-2pm ET hour on FOX Soccer. They’ve come a long way in a short amount of time. Friedel, Wynalda and Barton work well together.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Time to tee up the “Great Escape” song and (even better) the Business’ “England 5, Germany 1.”
We’re all Chelsea fans today!
We’re not all Chelsea fans today… in the slightest!
Where did Warren Barton go? FOX should have left him on the panel.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Ok Barton is on the pitch as a sideline reporter. Better atmosphere than that dark studio anyway.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
sorry alex not rooting for the russian mafia today Bayern 4/1.
Looks weird to see Martin Tyler and Gary Neville holding the FOX Sports mics!
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Watching some feed with Sky Sport pre game before tuning to FOX for kick off. I am guessing they keep bringing Curt Menefee to have some closure to the NFL fans tuned to watch, pretty sure FSC crew is enough?
Thank god we don’t have to listen to Keith costigan in studio. from the little I’ve seen of hi
I’d take brad friedel over Costigan and McBride all day long.
17000 tickets for each team in a 70,000+ stadium is a disgrace
“Football Family”, come first… real paying fans last with the left overs as is usual no matter what competition it is. The smell of corruption hey.
If Chelsea win, does Arsenal have to play a qualifier next year? I’ve heard this answered both ways by various journalist.
Arsenal go directly into the group stage no matter what happens today. If Chelsea wins, they’ll go into the group stage, too.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Prediction bayern win it 3-1
I’ve noticed players now covering their moths when talking now, at least they learned something from JT mistake.
Bayern look dangerous. Chelsea will have to make the most of the few chances they will get, just like in the Semis.
Chelsea is giving Arjen Robben too much space when he’s outside the box, near the left wing. No one is marking him there, presumably because Bertrand has been told to stick to Chelsea’s left wing (where Robben usually runs down it).
It’d be nice to see Chelsea hold on to the ball a bit instead of kick-n-rush.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Anyone else just have their feed get really choppy and then change to a different commentary crew?
Yep, same here Matt. Looks like FOX has switched the feed from Sky Sports to the international/world feed. Better picture and sound quality. Smart move by FOX.
Anyone know who the new commentators are that we’re listening to?
Cheers,
The Gaffer
And FOX has reverted back to the Sky Sports feed again. Hopefully Sky has fixed the audio/picture problems.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
We’ve had no problems here on Sky in the UK
Must have been something happening with the satellite link from Sky Sports to the US then.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Yeah, guessing the SKY feed was giving them issues so they switched to the English UEFA feed.
There have been so many issues for FOX since they got the CL.
Got it here in the Bay Area. But they’re back now.
They changed to the official UEFA feed, I guess they lost their Sky feed there.
…Back now.
C’mon Bayern don’t waste those opportunities, it could be 3-0 finish for gods sake! Chelsea holding on for dear life!
I like how Chelsea played the last 10 minutes or so of the first half. They looked more theatening.
You can tell that Tyler & Neville haven’t watched too much Mario Gomez games, everyone knows that he misses at least 5 chances for every 1 he scores. That’s why he isnt starting for Germany.
Chelsea can’t ride their luck any longer. Sooner or later, Bayern Munich will score.
I’d like to see Chelsea play the football that we know they’re capable of, spreading the ball around and playing attractive football, instead of counter-attacking all the time.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Mad props to Chelsea defense though… cant believe bayern still haven’t scored especially with some players Chelsea is missing.
75 minutes and Chelsea have gotten some chances and they are fortunate with FCB blowing theirs.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes !
Spurs are happy now. Muller.
It was bound to happen. Munich score, and now Torres comes on. But it might be too late at this point.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Hold on Bayern!
glad to see TM get the goal good player tough season.Spurs fans are dancing in the pubs.
Dirty Chelski
Here we go… Can Torres pull it off AGAIN???
i did not mean to highlight not sure how it happened.
WoW
Tyler: Drogbaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Neville: Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Neville had another OG
WTF?? Gary Neville let out an orgasmic moan in his commentary again?
Incredible header by Drogba though.
Now, let’s hope Chelsea decides to attack, attack and attack.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
WOW Spurs fans just stopped dancing.
I must say Drogba is the best big match player in the world.
Nice play by Muller, but Chech looked awfully slow on the reaction.
Didier!!!!!!!
Keep going chelsea!!!! We believe!!!!
Unbelievable, chelski have been terrible!
They should have just skipped the first 80 minutes of this match.
For the neural, we couldn’t have had a better finish. Hope someone gets a goal instead of a shoot out.
Just another reason to love the sport!
Robben certified choke artist. World Cup 2010, bundesliga this year + champions league this year
David Luiz is a lucky boy imo
Did he just…? Bahahaha! I cant believe what I’m seeing right now!!! What a game!
Arjen Robben picked the same corner for the penalty that he did against Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup Final. Way to do your homework Cech!
Cheers,
The Gaffer
Didier Drogba is like a one-man team. Scoring, giving a penalty to Bayern, and then defending bravely near the end of the first half of extra time.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
39 shots to 9 for Bayern, wtf, while chelski haven’t played like winners, they look like hey will win, there is something else in the stadium, where the F are the ghostbusters when you need hem?
Has Friedel always sounded so English? He’s been there a long time. Just an observation, not a criticism.
Only since he moved to England and joined Liverpool, where he picked up a scouse/American accent. Before that, during MLS, he sounded American. But he’s lived in England for 15 years.
Cheers,
The Gaffer
So, you’ll be sounding American any day now, right, Gaffer?
Chelsea will win on penalties, it’s that kind of game, no matter howcrap they have been they will unfortunately win.
Penalties — Germany vs England. Ugh!
Cheers,
The Gaffer
No matter the outcome, you’ve got to give credit to the Chelsea back line. Luiz, Cahill and Cole blocked shot after shot, and Bosingwa wasn’t even his typically atrocious self. I must say, I have enjoyed it as a neutral.
Now on to penalties
Congratulations Chelski
I know that hurts, Dust. Good on ‘ya.
Drogba wins it for Chelsea. How fitting…
No other sport like it!!!!!!!
What a season for EPL this season. Congrats Chelsea!
Hopefully the english players make their penalties next month. Im tired of seeing them do this in the CL and then choke in the WC and EC. Those were excellent penalties by Lampard & Cole. They better do the same next month!
Hopefully they don’t even have the chance to take penalties… by going out in the group stage.
I couldn’t agree more. I never understood why England under-perform so much in the WC and EC. They are a world-class team and they should do a lot better than what the history shows us. Hopefully, they can ride this momentum and draw out some good results this summer.
Really happy for Drogba there, nice way to end it.
Very much like very Barcelona match, chance after chance but just couldn’t get it done and of course the penalty miss in extra time to likely win it.
Can’t forget about Cech who was no doubt their best player in this Champions League run.
Sucks for Tottenham, gotta settle with Europa League.
Yeah, I feel bad for Spurs. What a weird season and finish.
Good on you Chelsea fans big time heart from your side.Spurs fans that was a bad beat this year 4th was not good enough.
Now what will Roman do? will he low ball DiMatteo on the salary or just give him a couple of years as the ball turns stay tuned.
Kind of sucks that they make these guys walk all that way to get a medal.
Good to see that silverware coming back to England! Sorry SPurs fans, but I have to like it any time an EPL side wipes out both UEFAlona and Munich.
Somebody doesn’t like my standard poodle? TOUGH!
Tottenham has only themselves to blame, and I’m a fan. After Arsenal was drawn by Norwich at the Emirates on the next-to-last weekend of the season, Tottenham controlled their own destiny to get third place and promptly got held by Aston Villa.
Now the piper has to be paid … can Spurs keep Bale and Modric in the fold now that they’ve played in Champions League and now will play their second consecutive season on the outside looking in.
I also wonder … what does this do for the chances of a Chelsea overhaul? This team peaked in 2008-10 and is getting nothing but older, even though they did take home the big trophy today. Will Abromovich try to keep the old guard somewhat intact or will he bite the bullet and try to get younger>
I had the same thought. The hard questions that were there before this resurgence are still there.
So who is the Chelsea supporter that tossed the beach ball on the pitch?

sorry for the bad link…. here is the link to see the beach ball suspect…
