What a brilliant Premier League weekend it was. The highlights, of course, being the spectacular match between Aston Villa and Manchester United with Federico Macheda’s last minute curling shot that ended in the corner of the net past the reach of Brad Friedel. And then the last minute goal from Liverpool’s Yossi Benayoun when a minute before all seemed lost.
It was a perfect weekend in the Premier League. The sun was shining. And oh what a joy it must have been to be at Old Trafford or Craven Cottage if you were a Manchester United or Liverpooll fan respectively. Sometimes the excitement of a game is better experienced on television. This was not one of those cases. Sure, the TV experience was just as exciting (especially as we witnessed Macheda’s father weeping tears of joy), but the noise and joy witnessed at Old Trafford was something special.
Both Macheda’s goal and Benayoun’s last minute winner were season defining goals. Whether it means Liverpool or Manchester United will win the league we won’t find out for several more weeks. And don’t forget about Chelsea who are creeping up behind and looked impressive against Newcastle United.
Here are a few of the other stories that caught my eye today:
- Top 20 Premier League Players I’d Go For A Beer With (BigSoccer). My picks would include Emile Heskey, Tim Cahill, Xabi Alonso and Jason Scotland (soon to be a Premiership striker).
- Free Preview of GolTV (Shaw Cable). Canadians who have Shaw Cable can enjoy a 11 day free preview of GolTV between April 17 and April 28.
- Premier League In Church Row Over Easter Sunday Football Fixtures (The Telegraph). The fixtures were announced on June 16, 2008. What took the church so long to realize that matches were scheduled for Easter Sunday?
