2006 Predictions, Part One

After a disappointing 2006 World Cup where England get knocked out of the 2nd round (losing to hosts Germany), the race heats up for who will replace Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The Special One, Jose Mourinho, is the favorite according to the tabloids and fans. But after talks with his Russian chairman, Jose decides to stay with Chelsea in hopes of bringing home the Champions League trophy in the 2006-2007 season.

Readers, feel free to share your own predictions or comments! I’ll post a new 2006 EPL prediction each day.

  1. The Gaffer says:

According to the bookies this evening, Jose Mourinho is 25/1 to take the England job. Any bidders?

  2. kat kid says:

No offense, but I never understood why you said they had a mountain to climb. I know hindsight is 20/20 but given the 2-0 aggregate lead I thought that Inter had to show an incredibly attacking form that they haven’t and ultimately didn’t ever deliver.

  3. Paul Bestall says:

I think Mutu & Chivu can be the key players for Romania and Modric and Kranjcar for Croatia. I have good feeling about both of those countries.

  4. Kartik says:

Look for Mario Gomez to be the breakout player of the tournament.

  5. Michael says:

I’ve got my eye on Tranquillo Barnetta and Valon Behrami from Switzerland.

  6. Utd fan says:

This is linked to the wrong article…

Anyway, I’m looking forward to impressive showings from the obvious:
    Benzema
    Huntelaar
    Nasri

And the maybe not so obvious:
    David Silva
    Modric
    Kranjcar
    Aquilani
    Bosingwa

  7. Lonnie says:

This is linked to the wrong story again. Just a quick note on your article Gaffer, Sneijder is capable with both feet but actually takes most free-kicks with his right.

Plasil will have to step up in the Czech midfield to fill the absence of Rosicky.

Austria might not do much but keep an eye on their striker Roland Linz.

The Russia squad has a number of potential breakout stars like Pogrebnyak and Akinfeev

  8. The Gaffer says:

Sorry about the comments being linked with the wrong story. I figured out the bug but won’t be able to fix it for this story (but it’ll fixed for other ones).

Feel free to contribute your ideas of who you think will shine in Euro 2008. Great stuff. Good point Lonnie about Sneijder’s killer right foot.

    Cheers,
    The Gaffer
